Why This Is Important to the Life of the Church

As previous generations of immigrant chanters from Greece have ceased to be a source for our parishes, many parishes do not have trained chanters, and they try to “get by” on a weekly basis. Many communities are often struggling to find a chanter for Holy Week. Those who wish to learn are often unable to find instruction locally.

Indeed, the vast hymnographic repertoire of the liturgical calendar is no small task to learn. Many take online courses which lay a good foundation but still, nothing can fully replace the experience of standing at the analogion with more advanced chanters and teachers.  The feedback we receive from those that attend TLAA is that it is “life-changing” and the intensive immersion propels them on their path of learning.  The Academy could be compared to a “boot camp” of our holy Byzantine chant tradition.

Likewise, artists often lack the knowledge and understanding of the Byzantine technique. The Iconography workshop offers a foundational understanding of line and form and how they are used to express not merely material images but holy images of life transfigured in Christ Jesus. The Byzantine technique has a long history within the Church, and qualified instruction is key to maintaining the correct practice within our Tradition.  The place of icons in the Church is theologically intentional and needs to be passed on to the next generation.  For these artists, their work is a spiritual offering to the Church and The Liturgical Arts Academy is an exceptional experience of prayer and instruction for them.

“Outside funding reduces registration on average by $425 per student.”

Most students are pursuing instruction solely in order to provide volunteer service to their church.

The subsidized cost is crucial for encouraging our younger students to pursue training; passing along these skills to them is of utmost importance.

Many students incur other expenses such as air travel (more than half of our students fly in), airport transfer to the DRC, driving costs, as well as taking time off from their jobs to attend.

Program costs include all classroom materials and equipment for chanters and iconographers, as well as hymn composition, and liturgical supplies

All 4 of our Instructors support their families as professional liturgical artists and have dedicated their lives to research, production, and expansion of their talents. We are committed to giving them a stipend worthy of their dedication and covering their room and board.

The Liturgical Arts Academy is an offering to the Glory of God.
